While World Wind really does not lend
itself as well as Google Earth does to this particular application.
However, its overall power and mapping capability, as well as the
ease in which the code translates, make it worthwhile.
Installation instructions.
Two options are available when installing the WAHikes addon to World Wind. Both do exactly the same thing; copy files into the proper folder locations. The .exe installer should recognize the correct path and make it straight forward. Please read the first item in the Caveat section and be aware of a known bug.

Caveats
- Install procedure very specific
- IMPORTANT! The most critical part in using the World Wind addon is where to install it. One of the biggest problems with the software is its seamingly complete lack of error messages. If you read and understand the following instructions, it will save you a lot of time. Addons which only add placemarks, like WW_WAHikes; are comprised of two parts:
- An XML file ("WAHikingBooks_V100.xml")
- A bunch of image files.
- It is crucial that these are copied to the following directories exactly as shown :
- XML into [World Wind Base Dir]\Config\Earth
- Images into [World Wind Base Dir]\Add-ons\Earth\Hikes\Icons
- The installer .exe file has a bug when browsing to the base directory which may attempt to copy the files incorrectly to ..\World Wind 1.4\World Wind 1.4\Config\Earth - Be sure to double check where the .xml and image file are being copied to.
- Right click on "third layer" misses target
- Seems to be a bug in the treeview list pane. When you right click on an box which is nested three folders deep, the properties box returns the incorrect item.
- Does not let icons "group"
- When two icons appear at the same location, they simply overlap. What's worse is that their labels get munched into one so neither is legible. Because of this, one cannot mix criteria - lets say "difficulty" and "max elevation" - by turning on both groups of data. It is also important to view only one book at a time when viewing hikes by their book source.
- Requires bandwidth
- To really use World Wind, you really should have a broadband connection.
- Icons thumbnails do not resize but become totally opaque
- One of the clever things that Google Earth does is that it makes it possible to resize icons when you hover over them. This allows for added info in the icon itself, such in the case of book thumbnails. In World Wind, the icon goes from being semi-opaque to fully visible. In the WAHikes collection, some of the book icons blend into the background making them hard to see.
- Bug using Layer Manager.
- I've encountered a strange bug when navigating the Layer Manager. It does not happen often but can occur. The main mapping window becomes restricted to the portion normally covered by the Layer Manager. To fix this, just minimize and maximize World Wind.
